Swapan Das

Swapan Das, born in 1969 at Kolkata, did a two-year preparatory course followed by formal studies for a Bachelor’s Degree in Visual Arts from the Government College of Art & Craft in the city. An exponent of the neo-Bengal School of Art, Swapan explores new thematic variations while working in wash and tempera and in a miniature format. His small and medium muralesque paintings primarily feature spiritual ideas and religious icons. The domain of mythology and life of Buddha, surface in his meditative compositions painted with ease and accuracy. Accolades to his credit started with a Certificate of Merit and then the Haren Das Award, when still at the art college. These were followed by several others, including the Abanindranath Tagore Medal of Indian Society of Oriental Arts. The artist worked under Late Mrinal Kanti Das for several years and as a teacher at Indian Society of Oriental Arts before turning to fulltime freelance painting. Swapan’s work has been exhibited in shows held in galleries at Kolkata, Delhi, Hyderabad Bangalore, Mumbai, and in cities of America and Italy and is part of several private collections. The artist lives and works from Kolkata.
