Shamim Qureshi

Shamim Qureshi, born in 1963 at Mumbai, studied Commercial Art at the Sir JJ Institute of Applied Art in the city and later attended a craft teachers’ course offered by the Maharashtra State Technical and Vocational Board. After training initially under Abdul Ghani Saudagar, she refined her skills further, mastering calligraphy, with an emphasis on the Tughra technique and the Lahori Nastaliq script, under the guidance of Aslam Kiratpuri. Drawing her inspiration from the beauty of natural phenomena, her art leans on the optimistic side of human existence. Though she works in a range of materials, including photography, painting, ceramics, and calligraphy, her preferred choice is calligraphy. Using the conventional medium, spiritual ideas resonate through her lines and strokes as her colours and materials, camouflaged in foliage and calligraphic writing, evoke divine bliss. Recipient of several awards, not only for her drawings, paintings and calligraphic works but also for writing and speeches, she has participated in exhibitions held at Delhi, Mumbai as well as Iran. Shamim lives in Mumbai and works from her studio at home.
