I Nyoman Toya born in 1966 in Batuan, like many other children in his village, grew up learning to paint and carve from his elders. Encouraged by his teacher and mentor I Dewa Gede Mandra he continues to work and refine his skills in re-creating mythological episodes on his canvases.
