Gopilal

Gopilal (1890 – c. 2000), son of Govardhan Lal Sharma, was born in Nathdwara and belonged to a clan of painters. Under the guidance of his Uncle Panna Lal ji Goud, who was the chief painter at the court of Maharaja Fatah Singh ji, he learned the nuances of the traditional style of Pichhwai painting. His wall painting at Nathdwara temple in Motamahal, still keeps the artist alive in people’s memory. It was his nature to help people and his society, and he taught many to paint, to progress and make a living. His students included some eminent artists such as Indra Sharma, Buralal Sharma and Nainsukh Sharma to name a few. The Nizam of Hyderabad and Hukum Chand ji of Indore were ardent collectors and lovers of his art.
